What Is a 5202 Fog Light Bulb — and Why Are LEDs the Better Choice?

The 5202 is a twist-lock base halogen bulb used in factory fog light systems on a wide range of cars, trucks, and SUVs. It runs at 12V / ~35W and outputs approximately 1,100–1,250 lumens with a warm 3,200K color tone.

Fog lights are engineered for a specific purpose: wide horizontal beam spread with a low vertical cutoff to reduce glare in fog, rain, and snow. The 5202 halogen delivers that beam pattern — but at low brightness. An LED replacement uses the same socket and produces the same fog-optimized beam geometry, while delivering 2× to 8× more lumens and lasting 60× longer.

Yellow vs white for fog lights: Yellow LEDs (~3,000K) reduce light scatter in fog and rain — the same reason older factory fog lights used yellow halogen. For heavy fog and wet conditions, yellow LED output is the better choice. White (6,500K) offers maximum raw brightness in clear or light-fog conditions.

Interchangeable?

No — physically incompatible across all three. Always confirm your exact fitment.

How to confirm your bulb type: Check your owner's manual bulb specification table first. If unavailable, pull the existing bulb and inspect the base — the twist-lock PGJ13 base on the 5202 is visually distinct from the H11's tab-lock housing. A VIN-based fitment lookup on Sylvania or Philips' site also works reliably.

What to look for when comparing: Always verify published lumen ratings — not just "wattage equivalency" marketing claims. Check for IP rating (IP65 minimum, IP68 preferred for truck use), and confirm whether CANbus compatibility is built-in or requires an external decoder.

Are 5202 LED Fog Lights Legal for Road Use?

Yes — LED bulbs are legal in auxiliary fog light positions in the United States under DOT/FMVSS 108 standards, provided the installation produces a proper beam pattern and correct output color.

Legal in fog light (auxiliary) positions

5202 LED fog light bulbs are permitted under US federal standards for auxiliary lighting. The key requirement is proper beam pattern control — wide horizontal spread with a low vertical cutoff to minimize glare for oncoming drivers.

White or yellow output is legal

DOT regulations permit both white (clear) and yellow output for fog lights. Red and blue are not permitted for forward-facing auxiliary lights. Amber is permitted for front turn signals but not fog applications.

! Not legal as direct headlight replacements

LED bulbs retrofitted into sealed-beam headlight housings are not DOT-legal in the US — the housing and bulb must be certified together. This restriction applies to headlights only; fog lights (auxiliary) are a different category and are not subject to the same sealed-assembly rule.

! State-level variation exists

While federal standards permit 5202 LED fog lights, some states have specific restrictions on auxiliary lamp brightness or positioning. Check your state's vehicle code if you are in California, New York, or another state with known auxiliary lamp statutes before installation.

Bottom line: 5202 LED fog lights are road-legal for the vast majority of US drivers. The legality is determined by beam pattern and color — not the bulb technology itself. A quality LED producing proper fog beam geometry with white or yellow output is fully compliant.

How to Install 5202 LED Fog Light Bulbs — Step-by-Step

Most 5202 LED kits are plug-and-play — no wiring, splicing, or specialty tools required. Average install time is 10–15 minutes per side on most vehicles.

01 Locate the fog light housing

On most trucks and SUVs, the fog light is accessible from behind the front bumper fascia or through a small access panel in the wheel well. No bumper removal is typically required. Consult your owner's manual for the exact access point.

02 Disconnect the wiring harness

Squeeze the tab on the wiring connector and pull it straight back to disconnect from the bulb socket. Do not pull by the wires — grip the connector body only.

03 Remove the halogen 5202 bulb

Rotate the 5202 bulb counterclockwise approximately 30° and pull it straight out of the socket. The twist-lock base will release cleanly without force.

04 Insert the LED bulb

Align the LED bulb's base tabs with the socket notches, insert it straight in, and rotate clockwise to lock. The LED is non-polarity on most quality kits — orientation does not affect function.

05 Connect the wiring harness

Plug the vehicle's wiring connector into the LED bulb socket until it clicks. If your LED kit includes an inline driver or CANbus module, connect it between the vehicle harness and the LED at this step.

06 Test before reassembly

Turn on the fog lights before reinstalling any covers or panels. Confirm the LED illuminates, check for dashboard warning lights, and verify beam aim has not changed. If a "bulb out" error appears, a CANbus-compatible LED or inline decoder is required.

CANbus warning: On 2007+ vehicles with BCM-monitored circuits, a standard LED's lower current draw triggers a "bulb out" error or hyperflash. The fix is simple — purchase a CANbus-compatible 5202 LED with built-in resistors from the start. No wiring changes required.
